As guitarists we should know more about rhythm. We learn a lot of harmony and scalar patterns but I feel we don't learn enough about rhythm. Hence the Groove Camp. In this first edition of the Groove Camp series I chose to work with master drummer Joe Ascione along with Rich Zukor and Vinny Raniolo in order to help us concentrate on different rhythms and odd time grooves. In this camp we will learn different rhythms that we will try to internalize. We will play odd time signatures in order to open up our ears, throw away our licks and patterns and free up our playing concentrating on the groove and listening to the rhythm section as opposed to regurgitating patterns and riffs. It is important to clap along, play along and sing along with each of the bass parts in order to internalize the rhythm. But most of all enjoy, experiment and jam as this is what the groove camp is all about.
