His troopers, they were loyal
His troopers, they were young
They'd follow Allan Wilson to the setting of the sun
They were hands from many lands, and many a distant shore
They would follow Wilson—a soldier to the core

Chorus:
Up the Washangani, and down the other side
Up the Washangani, where Allan Wilson died

The Matabele army was running to the north
And Major Forbes would follow whit for all that he was worth
But reaching the Shangani, Shangani River wide
Sent Wilson and his men to scout over the other side

Chorus

Through green Makone Forest the Matabele fled
The Yankee tracker Burnham said 'They can't be far ahead'
But Wilson and his troopers were surrounded in the night
Said Wilson to the volunteers: 'We will stand and fight'

Chorus

With horses in a circle, they sang "God Save the Queen"
And thirty-four young troopers would never more be seen
They killed ten times their number; they're on the honour roll
So take your hat off slowly to the Shangani Patrol

  • Hello, I am a Rhodesian and a 71 year old widower, living in a small town in SA. I spend a lot of time keeping myself occupied writing little stories and uploading them to youtube and wonder if you could tell me how you get so many views???? Sorry to intrude.

  • @kenneth1940 Hey Kenneth. I wish I could tell you, but it's stupefied me, too.

  • Thanks for the super sounds. Does anyone have the 'green & white your flying in a blue Rhodesian sky ....' Would REALLY love to hear that one again. x

  • @weepywillowtree QEMqQmSoWKQ 'Ere you go (YouTube is silly about URLs, but that's the video code).

  • GREAT SONG FRIEND. DO YOU KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND THE LYRICS.

  • @placentiabayman Added the lyrics to the description.

  • We may not hear from tafadzwankala again. Life expectancy in Zimbabwe is a whopping 35 years. So, I wonder if you go on Social Security at 32?

  • Hello Bwana79, many thanks for the advice and I am continually uploading little stories, keeps me out of mischief, lol.

  • @kenneth1940 Hi Kenneth, the only thing I can suggest is when you upload your stories etc to youtube it gives the option to add tags. If you make sure you tag your stories with the appropriate words like rhodesia, UDI, zimbabwe, salisbury, harare, africa etc. Adding as many tag words as you can will help drive people to the link and increase your views. Hope this helps.

  • I used to sing this with my brother! I owned 3 albums as a child, Clem Tholet and John Edmond Troopie songs 1 & 2 - played them continually. Thank you for the wonderful memories! Oh how I wish I had copies of them now.

  • @kill3456, which is better

  • Rhodesians never die.

  • @tafadzwankala they wallow in memories while you wallow in the oppressive, poverty-stricken aftermath.

  • Oh what memories!

  • all memories now, thanx to the freedom fighters who liberated us from the brutality of the racist foreigners who will remain unrepentant. Be that as it may, we are indeginising here in Zimbabwe while you continue to wallow in your stupid memories
