. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

A lot of people around the world ask this question of why we need religion. Here is what the Bahá'í Faith teaches.

Bahá'u'lláh, the Prophet Founder of the Bahá'í Faith, says:

"Religion is the greatest of all means for the establishment of order in the world and for the peaceful contentment of all that dwell therein."

He also says:

"Should the lamp of religion be obscured, chaos and confusion will ensue, and the lights of fairness, of justice, of tranquillity and peace cease to shine."

It is also important to note, that there is a difference between God's teachings and the various ways they have been interpreted. The way a person understands the teachings is their own way! We should investigate truth and see what other people think about certain teachings, but in the end, it's up to our own conclusion of what it means and follow it with the best intent!

A Bahá'í Prayer illustrates what our purpose is:

"I bear witness, O my God, that Thou hast created me to know Thee and to worship Thee."

In order for us to become closer to God, He sends us Divine Teachers, like Bahá'u'lláh or Christ or Moses, to set the Laws that God wants. Laws aren't here to restrict us and make us upset when we can't do something; they are here to help us live healthy, spiritual and pure lives on our path towards God.

In the Kitab-i-Aqdas, the most Holy Book, Bahá'u'lláh talks about the Laws of God.

"Think not that We have revealed unto you a mere code of laws. Nay, rather, We have unsealed the choice Wine with the fingers of might and power."

We also read:

"O ye peoples of the world! Know assuredly that My commandments are the lamps of My loving providence among My servants, and the keys of My mercy for My creatures."

This is why fanaticism is warned against in the Bahá'í Faith, because if we follow the Laws too rigidly, it can actually detract us from their pure meaning.

For example, a mother sets rules for the child to be safe and virtuously upright because of the mother's love for the child. Even the child doesn't fully know why those rules are set, due to its immaturity he can't determine why the rules are there, it still is for the better. If the child becomes to distracted with details instead of the meaning behind the rules, then the mother tries to guide the child back to obedience for his own good and she does this through her love.

So it comes to this question: why should we want to obey and be close to God? Well, in my own understanding, it is because being close to God is our soul's purpose. Our soul needs and wants to be close and in communion with God. See, being close to God means submitting His will, and being a Bahá'í means accepting and following the teachings of His Prophet, Bahá'u'lláh, as the Manifestation of God for this day and age.

"If there were no Creator, if humans were simply chance products of a thermodynamic system, as many in the world today assert, there would be no purpose in life. Each individual human being would represent the temporary material existence of a conscious animal trying to move through his or her brief life with as much pleasure and as little pain and suffering as possible."

So religion is here to help us become closer to God, Religion is here also to instill new social laws. Bahá'í believe that the teachings Bahá'u'lláh has given us will bring us closer to God, one of them is the unification of the world! Let's do this!
