Rock En Espanol band Los Skarnales and world-class accordionist John Ramirez are the musical guests. The hour-long program includes performances and candid interviews with Rosa Guerrero and award-winning producer Dan Workman. Our community guest and "Audience of One" is Joey Guerra, music critic for the Houston Chronicle, one of the country's largest newspapers and the largest daily in Texas. He contributes artist interviews, reviews concerts and also blogs regularly at chron.com and at http://www.29-95.com, a new entertainment/lifestyle website.
Seventeen year-old accordion player John Ramirez is the first performer. Ramirez is as amazing to watch as he is to listen to. He is the winner of 2008's "The Big Squeeze" accordion competition, a multi-state competition for nonprofessional players under the age of 25. The event, sponsored by Texas Folklife, was recently the subject of a PBS documentary.
Los Skarnales is one of Houston's foremost rock en espanol acts. The seven-piece rock band mixes in the genres of danzon, cumbia, reggae, ska and cantina music with a punk rock attitude. The band formed in 1993 and has opened for international stars like The Specials and King Chango. The band also traveled to Mexico for a series of gigs that culminated in a performance on the nationally televised variety show Desvelados.
