I see a lot of Clash fans knocking M.I.A for sampling this song. I would urge you to be more open-minded, as M.I.A is a cut above your average modern rap act. Her lyrics address similar political and cultural themes as The Clash did, and she even gives the band writing credits for "Paper Planes." Artists like M.I.A, while not in the same league as The Clash, represent the current generation's mouthpiece for political and social issues. That should be celebrated.

I don't think punk is that diverse at all, but rap incorporates samples from everything under the sun and there's a lot of interesting crossover indie/shoegaze/folk rap out there.

One of my favorite modern bands is Transplants. Punk and rap fused together seamlessly.

great point! my fault for jumping on it and not really even comparing apples to apples. ...and i think you're probably right about the modern punk vs rap but i also feel like punk has always been a much more diverse genre and a lot of modern punkers have taken some of their anger and made it action... growing food, divesting of the big banks, and investing in community. and the music has softened as well. a lot of modern folk-(fill in the blank) bands harbor a lot of punk sentiment

I said born of. Yes, early rap, like Public Enemy and Ice T doing Body Count, it was coming from an angry place and calling for change. Modern punk is as bad as modern rap. But there's more modern rap under the radar keeping anti-establishment ethics alive than there is punk.

lol at your silly statement... really? hip-hop has the same ideals as punk? so jay-z an kanye robbing Otis is the same as... geez, fill in the blank here, but let's just say... California Uber Alles. DK or Disposable Heroes version. maybe you mean some early rap that shared the ideals of social justice or maybe your "punk" started in the 90's. i like a lot of hip-hop but don't think a bunch of primadonna quasi-thugs with a good ear is akin to real social criticism

  • Random Guy.

Sure, but M.I.A took the Riff FULLY knowing that no fans of their's would recognize it as the clash and thus give all credit to M.I.A, as intrested I was when I first heard 'paper planes', It was still a sneaky move really.
