Video summary of the ALDE Seminar "Combating counterfeiting and organised crime"

Event date: 29/01/09 09:00 to 12:30
Location: Room PHS 4B001, European Parliament, Brussels

Counterfeiting has finally been given more importance at the EU level, with the latest figures on seizures of counterfeited goods from EU custom authorities, demonstrating that an ever greater number of these products is passing through the EUs borders. Especially a worrying increase in sectors that are potentially dangerous to consumers is observed (toys and medicines).

The link between counterfeit and organised crime is already well-established and has been demonstrated in EU customs operations, such as Operation FAKE in 2005. The European Commissions Directorate General for DG Tax and Customs suggests that the explosion of fake goods reaching the EUs borders is largely due to the fact that criminals can now produce them on an industrial scale. Counterfeiting has become a valuable source of income for the world of organized crime in exactly the same way as narcotics, theft and illegal arms trading.

This conference will gather together representatives from the EU institutions, industry, NGOs and other organisations involved in, or directly affected by, the fight against counterfeit and organised crime. It aims to provide an overview of the current situation at EU level, as well as identifying potential areas where the EU can act to protect the interests of legitimate producers, importers and consumers.

The conference will be organised in three thematic sessions, namely:
1. The impact of counterfeit on business and society
2. Counterfeit and the involvement of organised crime
3. What can be done to combat counterfeit and organised crime?

Karin Riis Jorgensen and Bill Newton Dunn would be very happy to welcome you to the event.
