Basic Engine Building DVD - Chapter 28: Honing

And finally we come to the main part of the machine shops job, honing the cylinder walls. It will do two things. First it will bring the cylinder walls to the matching diameter of the new pistons. Second it will leave a cross hatch pattern of light scratches, to keep oil on the walls and prevent metal on metal scraping. A dial bore gauge is used to bring it to the exact spec needed within 1/10,000th of an inch.

BoxWrench.net is a community and resource designed for automotive enthusiasts. The Basic Engine Building DVD is over three hours of engine building that covers everything from removal and disassembly to final assembly and engine start-up. This is the ultimate DVD for any home mechanic or engine enthusiast that wants to see a complete rebuild from Teardown to Start-Up. This video can be used to learn how to work on almost any type of internal combustion engine including V8, V6, Straight 8, in-line 6 and even 4 cylinder engines. All of the interactive features and menus will not work over YouTube.

This video is great for people interested in car repair, car care, and restoration. As well as hot rods, muscle cars, performance parts, and boosting horsepower. It can also help you to gain knowledge for increasing fuel economy, how to lower your emissions, and covers preventative maintenance to avoid little things like overheating.

The 'Basic Engine Building' DVD is meant for any 4 cycle engine. Regardless of year, make or model. The only thing a modern engine will vary greatly on, is newer types of variable valve timing systems.

The majority of our customers are working on pre '90 cars & trucks. But plenty on newer models as well.

This blocks cylinder walls will distort .0015" to .002" towards the top of the bores when a Torque Plate is installed... simulating the cylinder heads being torqued on the block. Why bother doing the job if its not done right? I mean if you're going to make a video for YouTube, at least show the viewers the correct method for the best results.

This was NOT made for YouTube. This is a SAMPLE clip from a 3 hr DVD on a simple rebuild called 'Basic Engine Building'.

We don't recommend the torque plate to the viewers for this 'basic' stock engine rebuild on the recommend of the machine shop.

The accuracy gained for a stock engine rebuild was not beneficial compared to the expense of honing with the torque plate. For performance engine building however, we would absolutely recommend the use of a torque plate for honing.

Why is the technician not using a bore plate on the deck to stabilize the bores well machining? I thought that was common practice since the 60's or 70's?

The engine provide the lowest fuel consumption per horsepower per hour - 140-150 grams.

The highest mechanical efficiency over - 90%.

The smallest metal consumption per horsepower and thus the lowest weight of the structure.

    The lowest atmospheric emissions.

here is what u forgot to mention, on certain high hp builds u will need a honing plate that simulates a head being torqued down on the block, you use this because torquing a head down can actually cause a warping affect on cylinders and can cause uneven compression, by using a head honing plate u eliminate these issues

Ainda me lembro das conversas que ouvia dizer ao meu paizinho, em criança, quando ele falava com o meu irmão-mais-velho, de «rectificarem as camisas dos motores», deve ser esta actividade pelo pouco que percebo de motores.

the brushes that were run in the cylinders are for a 'plateau' finish. this takes all the high marks off of the surface finish. kinda like new sandpaper compared to slightly used sandpaper, this aids in positive ring seating

I have a briggs and stratton 3.5 horse motor (aluminum), do you think i can get it .010 over (from 2.56 to 2.57) with a drill hone? its probbably already bored itsself .009 over as it had 10 LBS of compression even after reseating the valves.

hes saying this is how you build a 200HP motor with minimal cost and tools. If your building a 400HP motor you need to use a torque plate.
