I'm going to have to disagree with you on your concluding statement about activity.
I run an average of 5 miles a week, swim, do push ups and pull ups, and sleep on a memory foam bed. I'm 24.
What I realized is that I spend nearly my entire day (I'm a student from home and work evenings) in a hard, wooden dining chair. Sounds stupid that I didn't realize that was the problem earlier, but my back didn't hurt when I was sitting, it was actually when I woke up. So I blamed the mattress!
But it was most definitely the chair. Make getting a comfy, plush chair with good back support the first thing you do.
