MacRitchie Reservoir -- the oldest reservoir in Singapore was completed in the year 1868 by the impounding water from a bank. It was also known as the "Impounding Reservoir" or the "Thomson Reservoir". There is a 30-acre park, which has a jogging track with appropriate exercise areas and a tea kiosk.
The path encircling the reservoir is very peaceful and serene. While taking a stroll on this path, one can only hear the chirping of birds or the chatter of the monkeys to break one's reverie. One will be amazed to see crocodiles with their baby crocs in the reservoir too.
Till today, over one sq. km of primary forest still exists and flourishes in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, especially around the MacRitchie Reservoir. Remnants from the nineteenth century plantations and rubber tress can still be found on the peripheries of the reservoir.
There are several boardwalks on the edge of this extremely fantastic reservoir. These vary in distance ranging between 3 km and 11 kms. There are interpretive signboards along these boardwalks that allow a self-guided tour for the tourists along the bounds of the MacRitchie Forest. The boardwalk that hugs the MacRitchie reservoir also permits for the exploration of varied freshwater wildlife.
