Seven hundred U.S. flags waved in the summer breeze as the burgundy minivan pulled down 156th Street in Orland Park. Inside, was Illinois National Guard Spc. Nick Reynders of Orland Park, returning home safely from his deployment to Afghanistan. Reynders was stationed with the Delta Company, First Battalion, 178th Infantry.
Family, friends and neighbors, as well as some students from Sarah Callis Meadow Ridge School fifth-grade class carrying red, white and blue posters, greeted Reynders as he pulled in the driveway.
Callis class had adopted the soldier last October — an idea that neighbor and fifth-grader Ally Carey and her sister Kailey Carey, an eighth-grader this fall at Century Jr. High, had crafted. The Carey family has been neighbors of the Reynders since 2000.
We e-mailed with Nick and he sent photos, Callis said.
