This is one of the most utterly bizarre and outright surrealist scenes from this show. It never really gets mentioned, but for me it's a classic moment.
Just getting an insight into Michael's homelife and seeing how insane it is reminds us all of that time when we were kids and we went to visit a schoolfriend and saw how weird and alien their whole world was to our own, and with that we see that Alan is essentially living life like a child. Albeit a slightly lost one.
