This is the start of the Kerala Cycle Rally - 2011 organised by the Energy Conservation Society from the Government Higher Secondary School, Udinur, Kasaragod, north Kerala, India. The uniqueness of this school is that more than 90% of the total number of students here uses bicycles. 1,032 of them cycled for 2 kms at the start for the cause. The rally started on the 16th of September 2011 and the full distance was covered on a bicycle by one volunteer member of the E.C.S, Sri C.D.Francis, an employee of the Kerala State Electricity Board. Francis, a cheerful and principled young man was joined at various points by other bicycle enthusiasts during his marathon 657 km trekk from one end of the state to the other. The end of the rally on the 22nd September, coincided with the National Cycle Day and International Car Free day 2011. Francis was hammering accross some important messages viz the need for reducing automobiles from our roads, substituting it with bicycles and walking for short distances and public transport for longer distances to help our environment and future generations in an economical and an attainable/sustainable way. Everyone involved with this program should be congratulated.
