Three Refugees:
To the Buddha I return and rely, vowing that all living beings
understand the great way profoundly, and bring forth the bodhi mind.
To the Dharma I return and rely, vowing that all living beings
deeply enter the Sutra treasury, and have wisdom like the sea.
To the Sangha I return and rely, vowing that all living beings
form together a great assembly, one and all in harmony.
Reverence to the assembly of sages!
The Great Compassion Mantra is recited after the three refuges, and the merit of the recitation is offered to the Sangharama guardians. The nighttime spiritual food bestowal to pretas and all sentient beings are performed during the Great Compassion Mantra. The food is taken outside and offered with the wish that the merits are extended immeasurably.
三皈依後持「大悲咒」時施食 。
@ItalianBandit The purpose of an official ceremony is for public show. If that is very important to you, then is your buddhism really just to show others?? Or is it for enlightenment itself. For buddhism there is no need for public declarations.

Buddhism, what a belief! Not a religion, but a way of life.

@ItalianBandit its not like Christianity you don't get baptised or that you just become what you believe.

@ItalianBandit Hey! Yes, there is a ceremony that certainly confirms your aspirations to practice buddhism. But, you may become buddhist long before that. Such a ceremony would connect you to a lineage or a type of buddhism. In Soto-Zen there is a ceremony called Jukai-E. And I would guess that there are a number of such ceremonies in the different traditions. But the most important thing is to get in contact with a teacher and take refuge in the three jewels by practicing accordingly.

i have recently become Buddhist and i have a very big concern regarding the three refuges. I first went to a far away temple and they said they would call me back for the ceremony so i went to a closer temple where the English abbot said that there is no ceremony to BE Buddhist, i just am one. Then i was told about the ceremony of the three refuges. Is that ceremony one i have to take to officially be Buddhist??? I cant find an answer so PLEASE answer it someone!
