Many authorities agree that by 2025 the United States will face a shortage of physicians. Although new medical schools are opening while many existing schools are expanding their enrollments to meet the increased need for physicians, graduate medical education (GME) core training programs are seeing minimal growth due to limited funding...a problem that is exacerbating the existing physician shortage.
In collaboration with leaders from GME programs, state medical societies and national medical organizations, the AMA held a summit meeting in November 2010 to discuss GME funding options to meet our nation's medical workforce needs. These discussions informed the AMA's recommendations to expand GME and we are pleased to share them with you.
