Last Thursday, w hen Rachel debated Pat Buchanan about affirmative action and the role it played in Sonia Sotomayor's advancement into a more prestigious university, she got caught up in the whirlwind of the moment which allowed Pat to bait her into some responses she might now regret she made rather than the stoic riposte for which she has earned many an accolade. Because Buchanan was not there to defend himself in this clip, she had to settle for a fact checking of statements he made for which there were many errors.

  • As a woman, I would find it highly offensive if I was hired only because of affirmative action.

It would imply to me that I am seen as someone much too stupid to make it on my own merit, so I have to be helped by people so much smarter than I am.

How many people look at people of different races and/or women in professional roles and wonder if they are only there because of affirmation action and not because they are the best person for the job?

  • Did you stop to consider that there may not be any women in many professional roles merely because they are female. Sotomayor would probably only be a law clerk or secretary without the door to the law school being forced open for her by affirmative action. From there, she did the rest on her own.

  • Whats up with this thread. All I see are a bunch of dorks calling each other idiots and not even really discussing the video. The whole persecuted angry white male victim thing is sad and childish. Buchanan, Beck, Hannity, and O'Reiley are making a fortune from all you fat, spoiled, ignorant, dumbass slags, and they're simply just telling you what you want to hear, which is about as far from the truth as you can get.....

  • @Mom2BTJ You do know that white women have been, by far, the group that has benefitted the most from affirmative action, right? The saddest part is that even so-called egalitarian white women who support affirmative action still like to frame affirmative action in terms of minorities.....as members of the dominant group they are interested in keeping up the meritocracy myth.

  • @slowbaker You're so hopeless.... I hope you're one of the queers from the left-wing, so you're genes won't be passed on.

  • @GateKeeper50hotmail I'm positive that women aren't, and have never been discriminated against. Whoever makes a company the most money will be hired. This is why blacks have a hard time finding work, they have lower IQ's. Call me racist, I really don't care. This is just science. Proof of this theorem lies in Africa, where they have yet to create a developed society without the help of whites. i.e. South Africa, which was settled by the Dutch and the British.

  • sad.... so many white ppl think that way too... lol

  • If Scalia had ever had to compete at anything he wouldn't be on the Supreme Court. He is a mental midget and a TRUE example of the time of affirmative action Mr. Buchanan speaks of.

  • Rachel Maddows politics: The state should discriminate against white men.

  • how in God's holy name did this ass-wipe get a TV show?

  • This is AWESOME. She TOTALLY PWNED him,& unlike Fox "Faux" News, she did it calmly, using facts, without raising her voice, and even apologised for not correcting them sooner (she took responsibility for errors that were not even her fault). This is how it SHOULD be. The way to "win the argument" should be PURELY about and done through facts and in a civil manner; and NOT by yelling, screaming, name-calling and biased editing and skewed facts/propaganda *cough Fox News*cough*Bill O'reilly*cough*

  • I hope Pat saw this. He probably did.

I hope Pat reflected over Rachel's points. He probably did not.

  • Rachel should have asked Pat is he thought she got her show on msnbc because she was a women.
