John Parker's book on John Kenneth Galbraith is a great way for someone trying to gai a thorough grasp of what specifically has been tried--and what has worked and ot worked, and why--since the 1930s in the U.S.. The book is non-partisan and not hobbled by a particular ideology. I strongly recommend this book.
