@kevinherbert You have just made my appreciation of the wonderful Barry H soar to even greater heights.
Dear Old Honest John and Sydney ("from Sydney") were great old troopers the likes of whom will never reappear save through the work of Sir Les and Barry H.
Long live Sir Les and Dame Edna.Wonderful and dare I say it,proud Aussies.

@kevinherbert Don't know about Syd Halen Or Honest John, but he is definitely the penultimate Aussie politician, a politician I knew closely resembled and acted as Sir Les would, the bum pinch and leer, always horny, but I think it applies to many other Australians of that vintage. Australian humour is crass, quick witted and bludgeoning, Rodney Rude as an example.

@kevinherbert I'm a babyboomer Australian living in the US, and thank God for you tube where we can excavate great stuff like this. You've summed it up brilliantly. Humphries is an unparalleled genius.

The telling thing about his Patterson performance generally is that it captures almost all of the caricatures of Aussie middle aged men post 1950 I remember...as do obviously thousands opf mu fellow baby boomers...his Les Paterson leer, is pure ' Sydney Halen/Honest John Gilbert-working-an-RSL-crowd ' look..at an RSL..or yacht club..or smoke nights...ageing disgracefully...'cos they could....as a visual commentator of your times, Humphries is a giant.....an antipodean Charles Dickens.......
