The early 90s were a fun time for software and games, and they often employed creative ways to prevent piracy. Apogee's Commander Keen 6 came with a manual containing creature names, and after you run the program, you are prompted to look up the creature name. DRM from 1991 :) Who still has their manual? I presume you can obtain one at one of the abandonware sites...

  • I remember that my dad had a racing game like this. The instruction manual was just a manual, but when you booted the game, it would tell you (with *'s filling in for random numbers): "What word is on page ***, line **, word *."

Very annoying, but now that I'm older, I understand why this was done.

  • check the internet. that's how i got it working. google is your friend!

    ps. i hate google.
