The large interactive back-lit mural in the Mugar Omni Imax Theater Wing created in 1987 by American artist Austine Wood Comarow is a work of unique and amazing content. The medium utilizes no pigments whatsoever. All the colors come from the interaction of polarized light and the molecules of birefringent materials. The entire mural was made by cutting thousands of tiny pieces of clear colorless cellulose and laminating them onto polarizing filters. The mural depicts the history of communication. The installation was funded by a generous grant from Polaroid Corporation and was personally visited by Edwin Land before he died. For more information about acquiring work by this amazing artist, please visit the artist's website at www.austine.com. Her artwork is available in sizes ranging from as small as 6" (15 cm) to 8' (2.4 meters) and larger commissioned installations. This video is made from a compilation of VHS movies made during creation and at the unveiling in 1987. The music was playing in the background in the studio when the video was originally recorded.
