  • I helped install some wireless equipment in a very remote location. When we got back to my friend's car, it wouldn't start. It wasn't the battery, or the cold, or a lack of gas... The RFID in the ignition key had died.

    Now that's an anti-theft device.

    Thanks, RFID!

  • Why was this posted?

  • My car (corvette) has a hidden key slot in the trunk (above the license plate) in case of RFID failure, then it has door release handles in the trunk. Did you read the owners manual to see if yours has something similar?

  • Is there no physical port to plug the key into? Many RF ignition systems offer a way to insert the physical key into a slot in the car similar to old-style keys and use IR or a passive tag as a "backup" method.

I wonder... did the wireless equipment you were installing in that remote location use a high power output transmitter? Interference maybe? Or perhaps EMI burned out the key and/or receiver in the car?

  • What happens when RFID fails on someone's passport?
