"Take a look at these sheep. Why all these sheep? Because on November 6, we will celebrate the important feast of the sacrifice. All Arabs (in the Muslim world) will celebrate the date by slaughtering a sheep. Why? This is an old story that took place a long time ago concerning one of the earliest prophets: Ibrahim. Ibrahim was in close contact with Allah. One night he was sleeping and had a dream that Allah told him that his son—who was around 9 years old, or perhaps 7 years old -- had to be slaughtered. He awoke terrified, afraid of the command of Allah. But what was he to do? He was obliged to listen to the word of Allah. So he went to speak to his son and told him first how sorry he was, yet he had had a dream in which Allah had commanded him to slaughter him. What did his son say? His son said that he could do it, that he was obliged to listen to the command of Allah. Nevertheless, Ibrahim was burdened with the command as he prepared to slaughter his son. He laid him down for slaughter, crying, pained with the task. Yet despite his pain and for the sake of Allah, he readied himself to obey. On his first attempt, his knife slipped and the task was incomplete. A second attempt came with the same result; the third attempt was also diverted whereupon Allah saw what Ibrahim had done and commended him for obeying the dictate. And, thereupon, Allah granted a sheep to Ibrahim. When Ibrahim saw what had transpired, he was relieved to find that a sheep had replaced his son. This is the origin of the story. And now, year after year, all Muslims repeat this ritual. And today, people are happy to find this ritual date approaching. They got out to prepare for the festival and buy food, beverages, and sweets. And here we are, in Bab Jedid, an old Arab quarter in Tunis that is known by all as a place to complete these ritual purchases."
