Marvelous singing of the Kern - Wodehouse lyrics (yes, this tune was not by Hammerstein, but came from an earlier Kern musical, Oh Lady, Lady, in that Princess Theater series with P. G. Wodehouse and Guy Bolton in the teens of the 20th Century. Wodehouse later allowed Kern to use the song again in SHOW BOAT).

She was a beautiful young woman and she could sing!!

This is a pleasing to watch as it is to listen to. You put some work into making it so. I enjoy it very much.

I believe there's an animated cartoon of her singing a torch song. Everyone cries an ocean. Gangsters snivel. Buster Keaton blubbers. Harpo Marx employs window washers for his tears.
How true.

All her photographs looks a little sad and tentative. It seems that she's had a difficult life.

Which of today singers can have the soul of Morgan?

brilliant & heartbreaking. do you by any chance have a recording Helen singing of Why Was I Born? To my mind Bill was just the precursor to this later torch number from Sweet Adeline.

It's interesting, but she certainly doesn't sound like Gogi Grant! Sounds more like the 1920's, which is where she came from of course.. Also, the recordings weren't up to snuff like later.

I'm so pleased that great talents like Helen Morgan are not lost to posterity because of YouTube.

What a treat! Thank's so much for this recording and video of the great Helen Morgan. Even today, 75 years later, this is
great recording and a lovely song.
