Rep. Gutierrez meeting with immigrants, advocates and allies at a church on Staten Island as part of a broader public education campaign on the new Obama Deportation Guidelines

"Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) joins New York community advocates and elected officials at a town hall in Staten Island to discuss the Obama administration's change in deportation policy. The event is part of a national public education campaign to educate community members about the new policy.

On August 18, 2011, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it would review deportation cases currently pending in immigration court and temporarily close cases that government officials consider "low priority." The speakers at the event will discuss what the announcement means, who it will protect, and how community members can get involved.

Congressman Gutierrez is leading a national effort to provide accurate information to advocates, service providers, and immigrant families that will help them utilize the new policies to temporarily spare certain individuals from deportation.

Advocates in Brooklyn and Staten Island discussed the ongoing work in Congressional District 13 to increase immigrant participation in the upcoming elections.
