a short video to show how easy it is to remove a RCD510 from a 2005 Volkswagen Golf MK5.

i installed a Parrot Bluetooth kit and decided to do a video, as a lot of people ask how to remove these radios.

as you can see from the video, it takes less than 5 minutes.
i have had mine out numerous times.

the first time you do yours, it might take you 30 minutes (if you go really slow, and take your time)

no matter the radio, the removal process is the same for all of the VW radios from the RCD300 right up to the RNS510.

re installation is as simple as reversing the steps in the video.

i did not video the Bluetooth install, as the kit was plug'n'play, and there are other videos on youtube that show how that's done.

there are no videos (to my knowledge) that show how to actually remove the head unit.

  • hi..thanks for the vid. this will be a great help when replacing my head unit. did you disconnect your battery during the installation?

  • @iskooobydoo

no, disconnecting the battery isn't necessary to do this installation.

  • does RCD510 works fine on mk5 ?

    everything work on it?

  • @MunJawad

    it works just fine.

if you have an earlier car (05-08) you might have to replace the CAN Gateway module to prevent the flat battery problems.

also, the * button on the steering wheel will no longer function, but all other wheel buttons will continue to work as intended.

yes, the steering wheel controls still work.

even the blootooth one (assuming you have coded it properly) the only button that wont work is the one that changes the audio source. so to change from am to fm to cd etc you have to use the radio buttons.

the little * on the wheel will no longer function. (it doesn't work anymore in my car since the RCD510 was installed)

  • @exaturbo 2007. will the steering controls still work? will bluetooth START working?

    -thanks

  • @2Ronin666

the RCD510 is a MK6 radio. depending on what year your MK5 is, you might have to upgrade the CAN-BUS Gateway module.

    check ebay for these.

    plenty for sale on ebay.

  • can you install the mkvi radio in a mkv?

    do you need anything else?

    is anyone selling theirs(pm me)?

  • @uptheclarets100

as far as i know, the canbus upgrade is al you will need to do.

long with making sure the new canbus is coded correctly for your car.

it's not just a simple swap over to the new module.

  • Hi

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to take this video and upload it.

I am upgrading from an RCD300 to an RCD510 - is there anything else I need to upgrade, apart from a CANBUS upgrade?
