The Concept of Balance.
Balance is a central concept in Chinese medicine. The term balance means a lot of things, some of which are obvious but most are less so. Achieving balance requires a good understanding of this concept.

What do we mean by balance?
• We know what it means to balance our checkbooks.
• The tightrope walker must constantly adjust to maintain his balance.
• The whistling bicycle rider maintains his balance effortlessly.
• To maintain a balance in health, the cyclist model is certainly the most appealing, and should be embraced if we want to enjoy life. In fact, the concept of balance in health is somewhat similar to bicycle riding.

The concept of balance in health is illustrated as follows:
• Balance is not a mechanical thing or a mathematical equation.
• It is a dynamic balance because things are changing or moving.
• Balance has a long-term trajectory until it is destroyed upon death.
• Your balance is disturbed all the time as you go through life. The disturbances are: illness, trauma, stress, bad habits, addiction, etc.
• The disturbances are never fatal except the final one because your body has the ability to recover. Otherwise, you're dead already.
• Since balance is not static, it can be enhanced and moved to a higher plane or a higher balance point. This means your body will become more robust with better capacity for recovery from disturbances.
• Similarly, your balance may also slide to a lower point, which means worse health.
• To enjoy life, we should always strive to achieve a higher balance point, or at least prevent it from sliding downward.

How to achieve balance?
• The fact that you're alive means you're in a general balance.
• How the body achieves balance is a very complex mechanism.
• For practical purpose, we should pay attention to the result rather than immersing in minute mechanical details. Just like driving a car, we don't need to know how the engine or transmission works.
• Balance should be measured by feel, rather than by a scientific method designed to measure a narrow specific aspect.
• When we are in balance, we know it because we feel healthy and happy, just like the whistling cyclist cruising along.
• When we are out of balance, we don't feel good. This means we should pause, rest and do the right thing to help the body recover. Upon recovery, we pick up and continue.
• How long it takes to recover depends on the nature of the disturbance, your state of health, and the things you do for recovery.
• When you're at a higher balance point, the recovery will be easier and sooner. The contrary will happen if you're at a lower balance point.

The Chinese approach:
• Let the body do its own balancing.
• Use herbs to speed up the recovery process.
• For temporary disturbances such as flu and cough, use herbs to purge all the "disease poisons" from the body.
• For longer term or recurrent disturbances such as joint pains, allergy, skin rash, aging, and all the rest, use herbs to strengthen major organs and the Qi to help the body perform the balancing more effectively.
• There is no manual intervention of the balance point in the Chinese approach like using hormones to counter menopause problems. How do we know where is the balance point? How do we know how much dosage is enough? Failing to answer these questions, the method of manual intervention will likely bring undesirable side effects.

  • can you inlighten me about gaining balance when the human body has little balance, such as little control when walking>>>>

  • The problem you mention is a mechanical balance, not the kind of healthy balance that my video talks about.

Walking problem arises from bad coordination between the brain, muscles, and nerves. The coordination gets worse with age or degeneration of body tissues.

Keeping your health in balance will help delay the onset of this mechanical balance problem.

  • is there anysort of techinques i could use in order to help an indevidual i know whom suffered a stroke gain valance in her motorskills????????? any advice is very helpfull thanks

  • Yes, your common sense! How do you learn to do something? How does a child learn to walk? Very easy, just by doing it again and again!

You help your friend achieve balance in walking by giving him support while he walks and walks. His motor skills will gradually come back.

  • Great video! The one thing I am wondering about is when you refer to raising one's balance to a higher plane for better health... You also mention when our health is taken a bad turn, the balance has slid downward.

But isn't the concept of balance itself trying t ostay away from references to up or down? Surely raised balance is out of balance from the middle balance! Same as low balance...

Isn't TCM/taoism more focused on the middle path?

  • You're right in saying that TCM/Taoism is focused on the middle path. In other words, it's an effort to stay in balance. Why? Because nature and life present a lot of ups and downs beyond our control. We cannot tell them to go away, except to find a way to handle them so that we can survive healthily and in peace.

  • so true quantumtaoist every balance must be met even the carnal and spiritual opperating systems that we run on when we harmonise the duals we change our plain of thought to one based around oneness or(spiritual) duality is the rule of the (physical) and is under the plain of thought of the carnal mind alot of people think we are ment to disregard the physical and go compleatly in to the oneness but this is a mistake because without duality the physical is not possible which means nothing is

  • Your everyday life is full of ups and downs mostly without you being aware of it, because you can manage them. If you're more robust (move to a higher balance point) you're in a better position to manage your ups and downs. And vice versa. Balance is the result of your being able to handle all the ups and downs. Without them, there will be no need for balance.

  • Balance in health is like riding a bicycle as I explained in the video. You may fall anytime or lose balance temporarily (get sick) due to disturbances from within or without. The body always tries to maintain balance (your immune system and your healthy lifestyle). But you will lose balance finally when you die.
