It has only been two days since Real Madrid broke the world record transfer fee to sign Brazilian star Kaka. But already they are preparing to break that record yet again with the signing of Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United.
Money may have been in short supply in economies around the world during the last two years but in soccer at least it seems that there is still rather a lot to go around. Certainly at Real Madrid. For after much speculation linking them to the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, the winger from Portugal who has plied his trade with reigning English Premier League champions Manchester United since 2003, that deal now looks like becoming a reality.

Confirming that the way is now clear for Ronaldo to join the Brazilian star Kaka in Spain next season, The Sun reports that the following statement has been released from Old Trafford: Manchester United have received a world-record, unconditional offer of £80 million for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid. At Cristiano's request - who has again expressed his desire to leave - and after discussion with the player's representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player. Matters are expected to be concluded by June 30. The club will not comment until further notice.

The arrival of Ronaldo at the Bernabeu will signal a particular triumph for Florentino Perez, the president of Real, who has recently returned to the club after a 3 year absence. Perez has never attempted to hide his desire to see the 24 year old winger in the famous white shirt of Los Galacticos (The Superstars) and had promised to do "everything possible" to fulfill that desire. He has proved to be a man of action and not just words.

For the fee of £80 million (€93 million), which exceeds by some way the £56 million (€65 million) paid by them earlier in the week for Kaka, Real will add to their already star studded squad a man who has scored 84 goals in 196 appearances for the Manchester side. No mean feat when you consider that he is not even an out-and-out striker.

The fans at Old Trafford will undoubtedly be disappointed that the man who filled the boots of David Beckham with such distinction will not be pulling on their own famous red shirt again. But hardly surprised. The wish of Ronaldo to move to Spain has long been documented. Indeed, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson may already have the proceeds of the sale earmarked for an exciting purchase of his own. If such a purchase turns out to be only half as successful as the one he made in the summer of 2003, when he brought the relatively unknown Ronaldo to England, then it will still be a good one.
