Jane Rule received the Order of Canada for her contribution to Literature in the summer of 2007. In the winter of that year she passed away. At the time of the award she was too ill to travel to Ottawa to receive the award from the Governor General, and so she received the award in a ceremony presided over by the lieutenant-governor of BC Iona Campagnolo at the hall on the south end of Galliano Island. My wife and two young daughters and I were living on the island for the summer, and were extremely lucky to be able to attend the public ceremony. Jane was a big influence on me as a teenager, as one of the few out lesbian writers of the time.
