@KellyGreen5555 I agree. I LOVE horror movies , my favorite is Halloween. In my opinion it is the "Gone with the Wind" of horror movies. It never should have been remade. I got this movie for Christmas about 3 years ago. Saw it way back when it first aired on t.v..

This is a MYSTERY-HORROR MOVIE and there are some real self-centered people ruining the whole movie with their stupid comments.
If you haven't seen this movie, DON'T read these comments until you DO!
Come to think of it...don't even look or read the case the DVD comes-in, either.
This poor movie needs a chance to frighten the audience...and it DID when I saw it back in 1972.
It was a big best-seller and no one opened their mouths back then.
Better days...great movie!

***** SPOILER ALERT *******
If I remember correctly, at the end of the movie after the barn burns down there's a closeup of the barn door lock which has been unlocked allowing the boy to escape. Who unlocked it?

@MisterNiftyOoooh! You know, I never picked up on the foreshadowing of the freak show baby. I absolutely agree with you that the story works on a psychological level, their could be other explanations as well: is Holland possessed by his dead brother ?; can he REALLY move his consciousness into other beings or is that just part of his psychosis, encouraged by his grandmother ?; was it ( this one is a stretch, I admit)Niles who fell down the well. The ambiguity is disturbingoops out of room

@Maverickslayer744 I would recommend that you buy this movie as it is 99% a masterpiece that fails because of the horrid ending. The pace of the movie is perfect. The music is beautiful. The twins play their parts brilliantly. Purchase it from Ebay.

@cullmurr Remember the baby in the bottle at the freakshow? The mentioning of the story "the Changeling" while on the swing with his mother? There are clues as to how its going to end. This movie is a mystery on top of being one of those many child / devil movies that came out during that time (The Oman). Psychic ability aside, this story is possible on the psychological level. It is a tragedy. The mother at the beginning of the movie was devestated because of Holland's death.

@MisterNifty As I recall, that IS when the secret of Holland's death is revealed, then later,we learn the shocking events that took place that night in the parlour, when Niles "procured" the ring (which always went to the eldest son)

@cullmurr You can kill anything but a precious little baby. This movie proves how important an ending is to a story. The rate of change towards the end of the movie doesn't match up with how it evolves throughout the rest of it. Therefore it went extinct as it disturbed a lot of people. The shocking part exposing the truth shouldn't have been divulged two-thirds of the way through at the cite of the grave.
@brabon1 I wholeheartedly disagree. This 1972 film is a classic which should never be touched by present Hollywood.
Hollywood is lousy with remakes...they have zero creativity, so they start ruining great films by remaking them.
