According to the mainstream media and Congressional Republicans, the American Dream is no longer American, but a standard of living set by foreign automakers and their political buddies. Hear USW International President Leo W. Gerard discuss this and other important issues in his latest network interview.

  • John, by the restriction on organizing placed by the Chinese government they have denied workers the very rights we are afforded in our constitution. If you are convinced that labor does not need a voice then take a stand and tell your employer you don't want anything that was or is tied to organized labor. Give back your vacation, overtime, 40 hour workweek, safety, OSHA, MSHA, NIOSH, workmens comp, FMLA and don't accept a dime more than you pay into social security. That'll show em!

  • ccs you are right on target, too bad most of this country has been led to believe they are in the 1% and their standard of living declines more every day. Wake up everyone we are the 99%

  • Markets are required to be free to operate. In America, when the labor market gets tight why don't wages rise? Historically, we prospered when big labor had a place at the trough. Today our government and business are the only ones prospering. Sixty years ago that was referred to as fascism.

  • Can't. He was born in Canada.

  • Blondie got put in her place. "you are off topic"? What? Leo was explaining his point of view to perfection. You, fox news and Republican cronies don't like it though. Good job Leo. Fox News and their blondie should be embarrassed.

  • In the past many third-world countries didn't know they were poor. Today, many of them do, and that's dangerous for world peace. Indeed, the capitalist countries have the highest living standards, but it needs to be tempered. Colombia and Bolivia are two striking examples of what happens when there are no government protections.

  • beat: As I said, I've travelled widely and visited many 3rd world countries. I understand what abject poverty is. What you need to understand is that $10/day is starvation in the US, but is a decent middle class wage in much of the 3rd world.

Capitalism in the last 40 years has lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty (primarily China/India/Malaysia) to the point where they're living decent middle class lives (by their standards). Marxism completely failed to do this.

  • Have you every been in areas where you were jumped on by crowds who took every measly coin on you? I was. Stripped naked of all money by beggars. And this happened in a Buddhist temple! Then I can walk through the streets of Oslo, Copenhagen, and Stockholm at night and never feel guarded.

  • sign: I'll back off from my first sarcastic comment that "I didn't think we manufactured any steel in the US anymore".

But, I won't back off from the google comments that I cited. The fact is, we currently produce only a fraction of the steel we once produced, and a far smaller fraction of total world production too.

I'll also remind you, one reason we still have an industry is because corporations went through Chapter 11 in the 70s; the industry got smaller but more efficient.

  • sign: Of course workers need protection. But, IMO, this needs to come through govt regulated/managed oversight of corporations...and not through huge labor unions (big labor) that have the power to shut down entire industries with the strike.

Look at the power-house nations emerging in the east (China, India, Malaysia). They don't allow private labor unions; they've learned from our mistakes.

Even europe has been scaling back union power since the 70s.
