Cinuçen Tanrıkorur's Lecture-Demonstration on "TAKSIM (Improvisation) in Turkish Music"
at The New England Conservatory, Boston, Mass. USA in 1994.

English was Tanrıkorur's fifth language which he said he learnt by watching cowboy movies when he was a high school student. He spoke Turkish, Italian and French very fluently as he attended the Italian School in Istanbul and his teachers were all native speakers.

Part 3

Cinuçen Tanrıkorur here explains the concept of MAKAM in Turkish music_ its scale ("dizi") and Melodic Development ("seyir")
MAKAM = 10%scale + 90%MD (SEYIR)

MD=Melodic Development

  • Very interesting, Cinuçen bey you are really high educated, very nice explanation. Cok tesekurlar.

    Violinist, arranger and composer.

  • Excellent. There is too much emphasis in the west on 'scale', which should really be just a way of finding reference notes on an instrument, not the basis of improvised music.
