Welcome to the largest city in the world. Migrant workers flood in and skyscrapers rise up. But what is the real cost of rapid industrialisation? Jonathan Watts investigates.
Li Zhiguan, also known as Spiderman, perches perilously on the side of a towerblock. "I've seen a very big change in the city. From up here, you can notice the difference in the space of a week." For the rich, Chongqing is 'a place of dreams.' However, the majority here live below the poverty line by doing back-breaking work. With the population set to double to 20 million by 2020, worries about the environment and workers welfare are put to one side. Nothing, it seems, is going to stop the industrial revolution of the 21st Century.

No matter how inblance the society is right now in Chna, or whatever you say, please keep 祖国 these two words in heart. I am going back after I graduate form this school. Cuz sometimes, 祖国 is greater than self-interest! keeo that in mind, mister!
wow, I'm planning to go to meet a young lady in chongqing around Christmas....am I gonna die of lung cancer or something? And what about her...at 52, is she gonna be developing some kind of lung disease or get sick from the polution?
are u joking? I havent been to chongqing but I know hong kong (on good days, which means most days) and shanghai at least are cleaner than LA, and beijing only a little worse. pollution is causing premature deaths everywhere dude. its just a few thousand out of millions. it happens in the west too, just everyone is now on chinas back because its happening on a larger scale. just go to chongqing, u will be fine :)
what most bothers me if U.S> has had these problems and still do. Pollution, evironmental issuesand poverty is that they would do it differently then U>S> imrove from our mistakes.I forsee lung cancer, birth defects, and more hungry people........sad lovely people
While the normal pronunciation of "Chongqing" should be "choong-ching" ("oo" as in "book"), others may say "joong-ging" instead (Hanyu Pinyin renders the spelling of this alternate pronunciation as "Zhongging"). Some others also might say "joong-jing" (Zhongjing; for "jing" is "capital" which Chongqing is not).
