In his short life John Sheppard lived under 3 monarchs. The protestant Edward VI, The Great Catholic Queen Mary I, and the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I. We know that John Sheppard settings for the Lord's Prayer, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis are from the 2nd service and during the reign of Elizabeth I who despised anything Catholic or vaguely resemble Popary. Although she did have a deep appreciation for music. These pieces were written in haste for the Soveriegn Elizabeth who was in the process of formulating the 1559 book of Common prayer and was anxious to have common prayers in the Vernacular. It was shortly after t6he writing of the Lord's Prayer that John Sheppard died a premature death, and was believed to have been buried somewhere in the grounds of Westminster Abbey.
