From KETC, LIVING ST. LOUIS Producer Anne-Marie Berger speaks with St. Louis area veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, Germany's surprise Ardennes offensive in December 1944 calculated to break the Allied line in half that left 19,000 Americans dead. Berger first met members of group at a booth they set up at a Memorial Day celebration in Kimmswick, Missouri. She made arrangements to attend one of their monthly meetings at the Elks Club in Afton. The group comprises more than 300 survivors of that conflict. So many men showed up to tell their stories on camera that organizers gave out numbers. In her story, Berger chose 12 of the most compelling tales. "Everybody wanted to talk, and every story is different, even though it's based on the 'same' experience," says Berger. "All of the veterans are still very emotional about that battle."

  • These men were absolutely incredible. I served in Iraq, got shot at more times than I'd care to count, and the experience doesn't come even remotely close to what they did. Thank you to all the WWII vets.

  • Salut from Canada, god bless the veterans.

  • I am in awe of these brave men. I met Richard Eggleston at a motel in Arnold, Missouri, several years ago. I love military history and it was a great pleasure to talk with him. He told me about the group in this video. God bless them all.

  • Those men were not defending the United States.

Those WW2 United States vets were defending western Europe.

They were NOT defending there home land the United States of America from attack.

And you fcking 23 year old morons serving in Iraq and Afghanistan please wake the fck up.

  • I am glad that some people still remember what we did, what we went through so that Europe and the rest of the world could be free of Nazi oppression and terror. We may be old now, and it was a long time ago, but it still matters, it still means something and thank God for those of you still appreciate what we did.

If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read this in English, thank a Veteran.

    Merci à eux.

    Amicalement,

  • I met these men personally. They fought in one of the most significant wars in WW2. I can't imagine anyone saying that they aren't special. They sacrificed everything for there country. I hope that you can rethink your stance.
