As you may be aware, God who is known by many names, is worshipped in this formless form, called Shiva or Shivalinga or Shivalingam.
Puja is formal worship, and abhishekam is one of many forms of puja, therefore.
Abhishekam is simply bathing and sprinkling the deity or sacred object with sacred substances. Things used are water, honey, yoghurt, turmeric powder, a paste made with sandal wood shavings, etc.
