This video (recorded at 3xs normal speed) shows two female Barred Owls that shared a nest in 2006 in Charlotte, NC. The first section documents the male delivering food to one female who then passes the food item on to the incubating female. Cooperative breeding like this has never been documented in owls. The second shows a fight for who gets to incubate the eggs. It is not uncommon for a male raptor to have two females, but it is extremely unusual for the two females to use the same nest.

  • Actually, that looked fairly civil. Top mom preened bottom mom's face and bottom mom let top mom slide into place. Very nice. They both layed, right?

There's a guy in Maryland with great color photos of two females and one male Barn Owl who shared the guy's nestbox and comingled eggs. Those two females also contended for brooding time like your Barred owls, and without squabbling.

    This footage is sensational.
