Beginner Bantamweight (130 lbs) Grappler's Quest
As you can clearly see I started off the match with a counter throw to his takedown attempt, landing in side control, which should have given me 3 points, but for some reason didn't. With about a minute left I looked at the scoreboard to see that not only did I not get the points, but I also was inexplicably behind one advantage point. I quickly decided that I better stop hanging out in his guard, passed to side control and won.
Final Score: 3-0
You still should have gotten side control points even if they called the scramble even. Unless his knee was inside a little bit. Hard to see from this side. Was that Alder cornering you? He did a good job.

Yeah, that was Alder, it was good to have him there. My wife joined in a bit too, she knew enough to tell me to hold.

that first sequence is a tough one to score, because you didn't initiate the takedown, your opponent did, and then your counter created a scramble. that's the problem with the current bjj/grappling point system, there's a lot of gray areas, which are left for the individual ref to interpret.

I guess i could understand that. It's obvious to me what happened because I was doing the throwing, and it's a move that I would hit numerous times in college. I guess to someone not as versed in wrestling, it could easily look like a random scramble where I came out on top. For the record, though, it wasn't. :)
