They're singing "Die Wacht Am Rhein". It's a song about the Germans rushing to defend their primary western border- the Rhine River- during an invasion from France. Ironically, "Le Marsellaise" was written for much the same reason, during an invasion from Prussia and Austria.

Agree. Even more, I think about the feelings of the actors and actresses.. You see young men shoot to their feet as the song begins, and that young woman's eyes fill with tears as she sings... this scene is the heart beat of a moment of history.

I only see one person actually in tears, but I'm sure everyone in the crowd gets emotional in some way. Would you say so? Myself I think the Marseillaise is a rather ugly, violent, gory song, but this scene still gives me goosebumps.
