Actually, Australian's Collins class usually tracking Taiwan and china's sub when they are enroute to Japan for exercises......

In the hands of a skillfull crew and commander, these 2 sub's that were build in the Netherlands still can do quite a lot of damage to an agressor! Furthermore these sub's have the primary task to serve as 'enemy sub' for Taiwanese navy ships, in testing their ASW techniques.

Btw: 2 extra sub's of this Swordfish can be bought 'of the shelf' in Malaya!

Then Taiwan should build the subs and Aegis ships first. Such subs could be equipped with fishfinders and used for counterinfiltration in case of war(not the same as mainstream U-boats like 214 or Kilo class). As for Aegis, Taiwan already has the Jangbaek radar and the missile systems which could be fitted in locally built modified commercial ships.

Nobody will sell subs or sub technology to Taiwan. Taiwan has built a section of a submarine some years ago and also has blueprints so building just the fuselages would be possible. Anything else can be added later. The subs are not only needed because of the threat from China. Pirate activity is on the rise and therefore a strong navy is needed to protect commercial sea lanes.

Taiwan needs(Urgently) at least 8 U-214 submarines. Or 6 AB 471 type(Sweden disign) how Australians models.

Taiwan has the distinction of operating the last two operational TENCH class Guppy diesel/electric subs in the world. Ex USS Tusk and USS Cutlass. They were built by the U.S. during WW2. We sold them to Taiwan back in 1973. Good boats in their day, but now hopelessly obsolete. A deal is in the works for the U.S. to sell them newer submarines. China not too happy about this.
