amazing how Miles could get the rich big band sound with a relatively small band (9 instruments). Miles probably made more changes in music as a whole than any other artist, truly one of the greatest, if not THE greatest innovator ever

Cool jazz wasn't exactly groundbreaking or sophisticated for its time. It was more of a mainstream reaction to the end of bebop, more relaxed and "cool". Also modern avant-garde can be just as sophisticated and technical as anything from the past, you just gotta go looking for it.

I LOVE the simpsons episode when Bart and Milhouse dressup as playboys in smoking jackets....and are listening to this on vinyl!
