This is an excerpt from a discussion about undercover slaughterhouse videos and whether they should be legislated on Your Call, a call-in radio show on KALW 91.7 FM in San Francisco: http://yourcallradio.org

And watch From Farm to Fridge: The Truth Behind Meat Production, a video by Mercy for Animals: http://is.gd/3lelUO

Over the past few years, several videos produced by animal rights groups have exposed extreme cases of animal cruelty on farms and in slaughterhouses across the country.

In 2008, a Humane Society undercover video from the Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. slaughterhouse in Chino, California led to biggest beef recall in US history.

More recently, Mercy for Animals released undercover video from the E6 Cattle Company in Hart, Texas showing workers bashing in the skulls of calves with hammers and pickaxes, dragging them by their ears, standing on their necks, and leaving them to die without proper care.

To counter the bad publicity, several states have introduced legislation that would make it illegal for people to take undercover photos and videos in factory farms and slaughterhouses.

Do you think these videos should be legislated?

  • @DutchsMaria That doesn't really answer my question. Animal welfare advocates are just against needless animal cruelty while animal rights advocates are your good ole fashioned nutjobs who want to give animals "rights" and think they shouldn't be considered property.

  • @ZM7241994 I am a realist. I understand not everybody believes in animal rights. I personally do but I could live with the mission of the Humane society which does not call for the end of the meat industry but for oversight of inhumane treatments of the animals in the meat industry. I think it is important to set goals that are realistically feasable.

  • @DutchsMaria I'm confused. Are you an animals welfare advocate or animal rights activist? Yes, there's a difference.

  • Pertaining to fatally sick and injured animals, California revised their state regulation to immediately stop buying and selling of ill livestock and immediately euthanize the sick/injured livestock. The Supreme Court is enforcing an outdated law from 1906 which demands that they revert back to selling and buying these sick animals. Should this meat be sold to the public? • @ZM7241994 flawed logic, idiot

  • @MrGowfreak it doesnt have to be inhumane, idiot, thats the whole point of this dialog are you THAT stupid ?

    shame on you

  • @ZM7241994, "I also oppose animals rights because it's futile.". No, dear, your logic is futile. WTFF does a lion killing an animal for food have to do with people fighting dogs? You've decided that standing up for something is futile? Way to give up. Okay, let's go one further. You are offered 1000.00 to use your puppy as a bait dog. Would you take it? You don't like cruelty, but you won't waste time on it? Good luck to our nations, with children's attitudes like this.

  • @ZM7241994 Well, there are lots of humans who believe other humans don't have rights either based on a variety of reasons. Human rights violations are just as prevalent today as animal rights violations. Either you value your environment and believe all living beings ( who can feel pain and have emotions which animals do) should have protection under the Rule of Law or you have a dubble standard and believe you are better than other living creatures which of course is called.....hypocrisy

  • @AnimalLeftist No, I don't see anything morally wrong with dog fights. I don't like seeing dogs forced to kill each ohter but they're animals and have no rights. I also oppose animals rights because it's futile. Animals have no concept of right and wrong so it's stupid to try and create one for them. What are you going to do about animals killing each ohter(ex. Lion killing a Zebra)? Hire people to keep that from happening?

  • @DutchsMaria Oh. Now I understand the question. Do I believe in animal rights? No. Why? Animals are animals and human are humans. One is worthy of rights(Humans) and the ohter(animals) isn't. Now, I don't like animal cruelty but I'm not going to waste time and red tape on it.
