ear = "e" like in "see" and the r sound, e+r
year = Y+ ee + r
Year and ear BOTH rhyme with beer, fear, hear, dear, jeer.

...I am from the north east of the US, Bucks Co PA, between Phila and NYC, and we say correcTly, not with a K...and it may be the Phila influence but we also tend to use pavement more often than not instead of sidewalk...North America is so diverse it can't be fit in one category...
