I love SL and took a class about 20 years ago (I was pretty good for what we learned). I thought I would like to work with the deaf community but the more I found out about the "situation" - that the deaf seem to think of themselves as a different class of people (like it's hearing vs deaf), and most think getting help to hear again is wrong and changing them, and basically they have an attitude toward hearing people - it really depressed me that there is such a division between people.
@nonew3 Hi Nonew.I know this post of mine is 2 years after you posted.I hope that you found some deaf people or attended a sign lang class and have met others that are learning sign lang.
@DSQ89 do try best with clearing ASL not rude to deaf and hard of hearing people include me because i was use ASL long time since i was 6 or 6 1/2 (i cant remember in 2000 since we moved to past house in Clear water town in Minnesota)
Thanks for sharing the video, I enjoyed listening to your story, but it would have been nice to see the cat, even for just one minute, so I can see the kitty you're talking about :)
Relax ... I didn't know you are hard of hearing. Smile ... Many hearing people don't bother to use CC or subtitles here. My apology if I am being rude to you. :) I have to be firm with hearing people out there. I grew up oral til I learned ASL when I was 18! I had missed out alot! If you wanna me to share this story about the Deaf/Blind cat - I am happy to do this for you!
No we can't understand what you are saying if we don't understand sign language. However, it's a courtesy to us hearing people that you do post a caption. We make the same allowance for you by posting captions on audio videos. It's called courtesy, and it should be far more common.
