The Ensoniq ESQ-1 is a hybrid synthesizer from 1986. It has 32 digital waveforms and analog lowpass filter. It is flexible, since it employs 3 oscillators, 4 envelopes and 3 LFO's per voice. It is 8 voice polyphonic. Also it has a built in pattern sequencer. It is a kind of "poorman's PPG".

  • @douro20 the boot disks were usually for the sequencers.

  • i just bought one

  • At least you don't have to have a boot disk for this, unlike some other Ensoniq synthesizers.

  • Another nice demo. I loved my SQ-80. You could create exact replicas of sounds from Arps, Moogs, and the like. I recreated many famous sounds on mine, including the lead sound from Summer Madness by Kool and the Gang, which was originally made on an Arp 2600. Those Ensoniq synths are bad ass.

  • hah wow I have this. I wonder how much I can get for it I even have the soundcart too!!!

  • i saw somebody selling a ensoniq esq-1 for $450 including bose speakers, keyboardstand, footpedal, and voice 80 volume 1 cartridge .is that a good deal or is it expensive??what do you think?

  • are you playing two different ensoniq esq"s ?.i saw the cartridge on the left side when you was playing then i saw the cartridge on the right side when you was playing

  • paid 150 for my last one and made this....

  • I truly love this synth...Epic sounds!

  • Great demo. I've been using ESQ1's since 1987.

The "Poorman's PPG" comment is very accurate as the ESQ is a digital analogue hybrid like the PPG - Digital waveforms going through an analogue Filter and Amp. The sonic character of the ESQ sits somewhere between my Prophet 08 and Waldorf Q. Mine is v3.53 so has hidden waves. Very flexible and out-Matrixes a Matrix 6 IMHO. Can sound very DX at times too. The Air Choir sold me. Have to demo mine some time
