You may remember our Audix i5 vs. Shure SM57 shootout from a while back, wherein the i5 seemed to hold it's own -- if not outperform -- the SM57 on a guitar amp. We'd been eager to hear it on snare, and Tristan James of Proletariat Productions was eager to set up an audition for us.

Though we were pretty jazzed about the i5's aggressive high end and presence on a Vox AC15, James is a bit less enthused.

  • Wow. After 30 years of playing pro and mixing, I find this video useless.

The i5 makes a guitar sound exactly as the cab through the FOH. It also kills on snare, if placed and eq'd properly.

Perhaps the "engineer" never heard of mic placement or EQ. You can't compare a 57 and i5 unless you dial them both in, and place them ideally. Guitar or snare.

The i5 is MUCH more transparent.

Seems the norm today for the younger kids to slam on gear they don't know how to use correctly.

  • yeah i guess its alla opinionbased, but i prefer the i5 over the sm57 anyday when i mic drums.

might use a 57 on the bottom to catch a little more of the strainer i i so wish but for the top i 9/10 times go with the audix i5. OR the senheisser.

where you say you dont find a use for it you cant be serious, works great for guitar amplifiers as well, can even use it as a vocal mic if recording some niffty backtracking vocals etc.

jeez the occations it can be use'd is endless.

  • I've seen a lot of things on YouTube, but this character assassination of a microphone is a first!

  • you moron! i could tell it wouldn't sound good the second i saw the mic HALF POINTED AT THE RIM. how can you give proper judgment on a mic when you dont know how to place it properly? how are you supposed to give a good review of a drum mic when you sound less then a 5th grader just learning to play a snare. you realize you look like one big joke right now right? if you can't handle getting a good sound out of a mic (regardless of mic quality) then you might as well find another job

  • Maybe get a real drummer to play so we can hear what it should sound like...

  • To be completely straightforward I think that what he's really saying about himself in this video (when he says that he hates the sound of the i5) is that he hates a mic that is completely transparent. So he's incapable of using a mic that DOESN'T color the tone for you. That sucks. A true microphone shouldn't be compensating for the lack of skill in the engineer.

  • This guy can talk a lot, but can't mic a snare properly pfffff

  • wow, who would use such a tiny room for drum recording? bet they dont get repeat customers with ideas like this

  • Man, that is wrong. I feel embarrassed for these two people.

  • Audix all the way man, shure blows

  • i get a very true sound with mine. my amp sounds like my amp comming threw the pa. with a 57 it's usually too bright.
