Taylor's label was hesitant to release it as a single because they thought the message was too dark to be understood. RB Greaves also released it as a single before Taylor.
Johnny Rivers was big time back when I was a teen in the 60ss. Memphis is the song I remember him by. He does an outstanding job on "Fire & Rain" too. Curiosity made me look him up & found that he was Italian. I would never have guessed it because of they style of music he played. He was great.
This version, believe it or not, actually charted on Billboard's Hot 100 BEFORE James Taylor's classic...it was hearing this on the radio that prompted Warner Bros. executives to get James' version out as a single...the rest is history
Great version ... love this video too.
[Italian singers .........sigh!!!]
