Sherry Wolf of the ISO speaks at the Prop 8 is Going Down Rally Filmed by Paul Hubbard at Socialism 2009 conference in San Francisco - 7-3-09 additional cameras: Jeffrey Boyette, Alex Fu
@fileboy2002 - I made a comment responding to the video. It had to do with her discussion of the gay community being indifferent or even unfriendly to the left. There are and were valid reasons for that, in my opinion. Why does this stress you out so much? I'm a lefto, myself. Get over yourself.
@TreblePop Ugh. Look, if you think this woman is insincere, if you find something she says objectionable, if you disagree with what she wants, fine. Write her a letter. Personally, I just think you're trolling, looking for mole hills to make mountains out of.
LGBT people are the last group of people who are denied basic civil rights in most of the world, and in many western nations including the US. Seeing as how this is the case, it seems that LGBT issues would be at the top of the list in terms of social issues. But it's not. Look at any lefto web site, and you'll notice the order in which their beliefs are listed. LGBT issues are usually listed pretty close to the last.
1) This is a total non-sequitor. The left is tiny--how is tolerance for homophobia their fault? And I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Gay liberation is a major theme of the left nowadays.
2) Again, you're just wrong. Large sections of the left have been trying to stand up for gay right for decades. The mainstream gay-rights groups have rejected them, preferring to throw in their lot with the Democrats.
1.) If all of the pro-gay people in the world were all that pro gay, there'd be no tolerance of homophobia. You should at least be honest enough to admit that the left places homophobia pretty low on its list of priorities.
2.) In other words, whatever progress gay people have made has been no thanks to the left. Just like the others, they've been dragged kicking and screaming into a token acceptance of gay people. Contrast this to the their advocacy of any other group
1) While the sections of the left (large sections, unfortunately) have been hostile to the gay movement, the ISO has been pro-gay from day one.
2) Th eleft was no more (or less) ignorant about gay issues than the psychiatric/medical establishment was. Homosexuality wasn't even taken ff the list of psychiatric disorders until 1969.
1. the traditional hostility of the left to gay people (while claiming that the gay activists of the late eighties and early nineties) were hostile to the left)
2. A lot of the earlier gay rights movement consisted largely of gay white men because they were the ones who chose to get involved.

@TreblePop You're missing a few things.

Sherry Wolf fails to discuss -
1. the traditional hostility of the left to gay people (while claiming that the gay activists of the late eighties and early nineties) were hostile to the left)
2. A lot of the earlier gay rights movement consisted largely of gay white men because they were the ones who chose to get involved.
