you want to hear something crazy?
my grandfather about ten years ago killed an old squaw while duck hunting.
no one new what the bird was when we retrieved it... but eventually found out what it was,
the craziest part about it was that it was in the southern marshes of Texas where we live and hunt!
we have virtually no explanation of how the brid got down that south or why, but it most certainly was a very very rarity.
now its stuffed on my wall :) beautiful bird

Oldsquaw (long-tailed ducks) usually winter off the coast of Maine. I see them here all the time in the winter. They make the FUNNIEST call.

haha im from the NC coast and ive been tryin to kill an oldsquaw to mount forever. theyer really smart and wont decoy. haha its pretty funny that you just kinda found him and picked him up.

they winter on the great lakes

Thats crazy theyre usually out in the middle of the lake. never thought id see one on land of its own accord

lmao, thats pretty funny
thats kinda cool that it let you pick it up and get close. It seems really relaxed. The long tailed ducks out here in Washington dont allow you to get very close. Did it seem to have any health problems or was it just exhausted?

Thanks for the comment. Its funny because I thought it was sick too. I am familiar with birds of Michigan but never saw anything like this before. I email a picture of it to a family friend and she said it was an "oldsquaw" An artic bird that flew just a little to far south. Come to find out it migrates at night and all it was doing was resting...lol. I let it go a few hours later, it looked back at me as if to say..."You @sshole, I was trying to sleep!"
Alls well that ends well.
