THE NORMAL HEART, Larry Kramer's explosive drama of the early years of the AIDS epidemic, first opened to thunderous critical acclaim at New York City's Public Theater in April, 1985. On April 18, 1993, as the plague raged on, a group of the stage's most celebrated talents joined forces in a benefit reading of the play to raise money and awareness in the ongoing fight against AIDS. Their performance is now Broadway legend—a one-night-only union of hearts and voices raised in anguish, anger and love that electrified the standing-room-only audience and confirmed once more teh fiery brilliance of Kramer's landmark play.

  • @keilitzb ... Not entirely fair. Barbra has been trying to turn THE NORMAL HEART into a movie since 1985. She was foiled by timing (actor availability), financing (studios willing to pay), and Mr. Kramer himself (whether he would write the screenplay solo, or share credit). There have been TWO Broadway productions since, both getting good reviews. Streisand put together the current Mark Ruffalo/Julia Roberts casting, then Kramer bailed. Can't say she didn't try ... HARD. That's Showbiz.

  • Why did she hang on for ten years to the rights to this great play without filming it? She was too busy getting funding for "The Mirror Has Two Faces"?

  • As much as I love Barbra and have followed her career since day 1 she speaks with forked tongue and insincerity about turning this play into a movie. It's been 25 years since the initial impact of this play hit off-broadway and now 25 years later an equally brilliant revival on Broadway. So I would ask Barbra why the hesitation especially when the subject matter hits home.

  • There is a film coming..thats'.. what I have heard.

  • A powerful reading !....bravo barbra! ty for posting

  • Over 20 years since this, and the film is still not yet a "reality".
