As far as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints being "forced" or "required" to donate or support proposition 8 that is just rumour. Of course the church has always supported traditional marriage since the beginning of time and members were merely encouraged to continue to support such and vote our conscience. We are always only taught to exercise our own freedom of choice without any fear of retribution either way from the church. However, the point is actually moot because all donations were to the Coalition which is not owned by the church so any claims of its members being nothing but puppets with no ability to think for themselves are silly at best.

We do teach and have always taught tolerance, love and acceptance of all people unconditionally and continue to do so. I realize some groups actually teach hate and we, and I personally, disagree strongly with this; we do not hate anyone even if we disagree with a lifestyle doesn't mean we can't love each and every person who doesn't believe the way we do. After all that was what Jesus Christ and his apostles taught to love all men and women irregardless of faith or lack thereof.

I think it is beautiful to see people of all faiths or none uniting over the love of family and the defintion of marriage = one man + one woman, God bless America and the freedoms we all yet enjoy, remember that all it takes to lose your freedom is for people of good conscience to remain silent, to paraphrase one of our most vocal founding fathers, even Thomas Jefferson.

"All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent" -Thomas Jefferson.

ADL issued the following statement:

"Although we strongly opposed Proposition 8, its passage does not justify the defacement and destruction of property. We urge Californians to channel their frustration and disappointment in productive and responsible ways to work towards full equality for all Americans. To place anyone in fear of threat to their houses of worship or their personal security because they have expressed deeply held religious views is contrary to everything this nation represents. Our Constitution's First Amendment protects freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of religion for all of us."

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

  • Now this needs to be put on tv so people can see the real truth about us. awesome

  • And just look at what is happening now that the voice of the people didn't vote against proposition 8, now they are having a panel of seven justices, six of whom already voted to review the challenges.

If this is not a wake up call then nothing is, what is next? Anything the voice of the people votes for will only become law if certain groups "approve" of their votes?

This is an issue of serious concern for all Americans if we want to preserve all of our freedoms, period.

  • I think respect is important. Shrieking names and using degrading language seems to go counter to that!

  • The concern is also about the fact that what has happened here is that a church and it's members have expressed their freedom of speech which is a Civil Right. The 1st Amendment to be specific. No Californian was forced to vote either way.

The church simply taught that we should support what Jesus Christ taught which was traditional marriage. We have, do and always will love all people regardless of their personal choices, we may hate the sin but always love the sinner.

  • This is a very informative video. I don't see hate and prejudice, but love, acceptance and outreach to all. This is quite different that what is portrayed on the news reports.

  • Thank you. These are some of my favorite remarks from leaders of the LDS church. I hope that someday church members will have more open arms toward our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters. There is so much warmth in the church, I wish that this warmth could reach more of God's sons and daughters.

  • Thank-you for the great video.....I wish all people could see there is not hate amongst us.

  • "No Californian was forced to vote either way."

and one side is trying to punish the other side for voting. Something that seems counter democracy!

  • What a beautiful video! Thanks so much!

  • Thank you for putting it all in to perspective.
