'Helicopter' or 'Bevel' Cube [better quality]

At the Benelux open 2009 I managed to capture a better quality video of this puzzle using Stefan's great camera. Thanks a lot!

This puzzle was made on a dimension 3D printer from ABS plastic using STL files made by Tom van der Zanden. All parts where then smoothed out using fine-grit sandpaper and a bath of solvent.

The puzzle makes 180 degree turns over it's edges unlike the traditional cube which rotates about it's faces. An interesting part is that you can also do the next turn even if you haven't yet finished the first turn. This causes it to change shape (jumble) in a complicated matter. By jumbling like this, you can swap pieces that you couldn't swap without doing these moves.

This puzzle was first made simultaneously by Adam G Cowan (helicopter cube) and Katsuhiko Okamoto (bevel cube). I made my own version of the puzzle, but I didn't 'invent' it. Only a few copies exist in the world, and I believe this is the first white one ever made.

Hm. What is the core for this? Custom core?

Yes, it is a custom 12-armed core. It has the symmetry of a rhombic dodecahedron.

(Why are people always so curious about cores? They're the least interesting part of the mechanism as far as I'm concerned.)

No, while a megaminx core also has 12 axes they don't have the right angle. Tony's Hexaminx shows what would happen if you tried to make a helicopter cube with a megaminx core.

how much did it cost u to print it?

I had access to a 3D printer at cost of materials only. That way, it only cost like $50 to print, but if you are stuck with using a commercial service it will cost many times that.

it should be name bevel cause katsuhiko's bevel cube exist or arrived first that adam helicopter cube...
